An authoritative and scholarly surveyFirst written as a report for the National Park Service in 1988, Archaeology of the Everglades by Florida archaeologist John W. Griffin is an extensive documentation of the pre-Columbus human occupation of the interior portion of the region. Portraying the Everglades' climate, landscape, and the culture and social organizations of its inhabitants, Archaeology Of The Everglades is an authoritative and scholarly survey and analysis of the profound influence human settlement had on the Everglades environment and a legacy left to future generations. Deftly edited by Jerald T. Milanich (Curator of Archaeology, Florida Museum of Natural History) and James J. Arizona's 144 Best Campgrounds
Published in Paperback by Arizona Highways (December, 1999)
Average review score:

The author's "personal best"Author/photographer James Tallon has divided Arizona into eight regions, then included charts and maps, information on fishing sites, climate and more to make this an extremely comprehensive guide to the state'e public campgrounds. It is illustrated with page after page of full-color photographs, contained in a conveniently compact 8 3/4 x 5-inch format.
Tallon admits that the campgrounds selected were his own choices for "ambiance, pulchritude and serenity." He says:
"At each of the campgrounds in this book, depending on the amenities available, I tried to consider the broad spectrum of campers, from those who need nothing more than a ground cloth and a sleeping bag to those at the top of the comfort chain in bus-size motorhomes with two bedrooms and 1 1/2 baths. A common ground for campers within these extremes is an appreciation of scenery, wildlife, natural and historic wonders, and outdoor recreation--including fishing, hiking, hunting, biking and bird-watching."
Tallon has roamed, written about and photographed Arizona's backcountry for over 30 years. While researching this book, he visited more than 215 campgrounds.

Light-hearted but educational - classic DurrellIn this book, the legendary Gerald Durrell (author of The Amateur Naturalist) uses the occassion of the 'birthday' of his zoo and conservation trust to reflect on a long career of adventures and misadventures with animals (human and otherwise) in the service of saving the planet. There are many laugh-out-loud funny moments, many triumphs, and a few depressing failures looked at with head-on honesty. A recommended read for all Durrell fans and animal lovers.

Backcountry Banff
Published in Paperback by Luminous Compositions Ltd. (August, 2001)
Average review score:

Very comprehensiveA very comprehensive and detailed guide to many of the lesser known trails (as well as the more known ones). Many of the maps are good, some are clearly lacking detail; however, it allows the natural sense of adventure to flourish in the beautiful environs. The book provides a wonderful overview of the area when the chapters are put together. Mike's directional ordering made it very easy to connect one trail with another for a day of small hikes or a day of longer hikes. I traveled too late to stay at any of the backcountry campsites covered; however, we did follow some of the hikes to/from, and they were incredible. I highly recommend travelling to this area immediately after Labor Day as there are fewer crowds.

Backcountry Companion for Denali National Park
Published in Paperback by Alaska Natural History Assn (January, 1995)
Average review score:

The best book to buy for backpacking in Denali.I met the author and his wife during my visit to Denali National Park last summer. They recently built a wonderful lodge, EarthSong Lodge, in which they share natural history and help their guests plan hiking and backpacking trips. Wonderful place, and wonderful hosts. Highly recommend anyone going to Alaska to buy Jon's book and stay at EarthSong Lodge.

Backcountry ranger in Glacier National Park, 1910-1913 : the diaries & photographs of Norton Pearl
Published in Unknown Binding by L. Lee ()
Average review score:

Life in Montana in the Olden DaysThis is an amazing book. The backcountry ranger's daughter compiled all of her father's notes about his time as a ranger in Glacier National Park in the 1910s. Unbelievable stories of beauty and hardship (he never complains about the difficulties but relishes the adventure). His language is full of colloquialisms and it is really funny. If you have spent any time in Glacier Park, this book is a must-have. You will recognize the places he talks about before there were trails or roads. Or if you enjoy history and the outdoors, it's a great read.
